First Outgoing Pocket Letters

I posted all about my first incoming batch of Pocket Letters a few days ago. Today, I'm sharing my first outgoing Pocket Letters! I apologize to everyone who is waiting on a reply from me. I've been SWAMPED at work and I just got hit with a bug of the sore throat-achiness-congested nature. Boo! I wish I could nap, watch Netflix, and make pocket letters all day, but I can't. Duty calls! And bills call too.. And they call a lot. Especially the crafting bills which Lovey is increasingly concerned about... Haha! Please be patient with me, it may take me a few months to reply (things are just that crazy right now..prayers appreciated!).

Anywho. Here are my Pocket Letter creations. They're all a little different and I expect them to change   over time. Some have similar elements. Some have mail tags, others don't. Some have sticky notes, others don't. It just depends what I'm "feeling" and what supplies I have on hand. And honestly, you can do ANYTHING! Do you have to include tea bags in all your letters? No! You don't. It's just a  quick way to fill up your pockets. Do you have to decorate both sides? Heavens no! I'd never get done. If you have the luxury of having extra time in your day, then feel free to!

Pocket Letter Sneak Peek

I've received a healthy-sized stack of GORGEOUS pocket letters from my Pocket Letter Pals! It's so exciting. I shared about them in this post, "First Batch of Pocket Letters," and I also made a YouTube video giving a closer look at each letter. It's so fun getting these in the mail and looking through each little pocket. Your individuality shines through each piece. They're so unique and yet similar. I'm loving this whole Pocket Letter Pals experience thus far! Hope you are too!

Now that I've received my first round, I need to start replying! I don't like sharing full-on letters because it takes away the surprise factor. Usually when I share my outgoing snailmail online, I either share peeks, or I don't disclose the recipient. So that's what I'm doing today. Here's a tiny, infinitesimal sneak peek at a reply I'm working on...

It's been so fun! I hope my Pocket Letter Pal enjoys it!

First Batch of Pocket Letters (Includes Video)

Yesterday I shared a post about my growing pocketbook (AKA binder that holds the letters from my Pocket Letter Pals). Well I finally had a moment to sit down and open my first incoming batch of letters! Yay! I filmed myself doing this because A. it was a momentous occasion I needed to record and B. It's a good way for other people to get ideas and inspiration for their own Pocket Letters.

I've embedded the video here for you to watch:
In the next few days I hope to share more pictures of everyone's letters. They were absolutely GORGEOUS! Thank you!!!

My Pocketbook is Growing!

I figured out that the phrase "Incoming Pocket Letter Pals Collection Binder Holder Folders" is  a mouthful! So lets all just call the binders we store our precious incoming Pocket Letters, POCKETBOOKS! What do you think? I think it's amazing! Haha! Just because I like saying, "My pocketbook is growing!" My real life pocketbook is not growing. In fact, it's doing the opposite because I've been buying some more crafting supplies! Yikes!

But back to the story.. My pocketbook is growing...fast! Just look at my first incoming batch! They're BEAUTIFUL! I'm so thankful for everyone who has taken the time to create these letters for me. The amount of time you put into them really shows, and I'm beyond honored. THANK YOU! I'll be working on your replies very soon!

Also, here's a picture of the binders that will house my letters from my Pocket Letter Pals:

Janette Lane's Pocket Letter Guide

Hello friends! Today I'm sharing a Pocket Letter Guide that gives an explanation about what to include in your Pocket Letter. This guide is very similar to the one I posted on my Youtube video, "Basic Pocket Letter Tutorial" a few days ago, but it provides more details. I'm going to "walk" you through the different components of a Pocket Letter. Basically this creative mailing method is a typical penpal letter as a whole. It consists of a letter, a mail tag, and other paper tidbits and goodies. Each part of the penpal letter is put in a different pocket. Do you have to include each component? Nope! Just make sure you include a letter to your Pocket Letter Pal! That's pretty much the only "rule".

LETTER

The letter doesn't have to be long. Introduce yourself and let your Pocket Letter Pal know more about you. Tell them where you're from, what you do for a living, etc. You can write it on a normal sized piece of paper, fold it up, and tuck it in one of the pockets.

EPHEMERA

This is a quick way to spruce up your letter. You can include die cuts, cute paper bits, vellum paper, etc.

STICKERS

You can tuck a few stickers in this pocket. No sweat, right?

MAIL TAG

Mail tags are popular in the penpal community. What's a mail tag? It's a specific set of questions that are asked so your Pocket Letter Pal can answer in his or her reply to you. Make the questions on the shorter side, and only as a few. Some questions I tend to ask are:

-What are your TOP 5 Favorite movies?
-Best book you read last year?
- Chocolate or Vanilla?

These questions can be as creative as you'd like. If you're only doing a one-time swap, then these aren't practical since you'll only be exchanging once. But it is a good idea if you are planning on swapping Pocket Letters indefinitely.

POCKET LETTER EXPLANATION

The "Pocket Letter Explanation" card gives a brief overview of Pocket Letters and how Pocket Letters work. You can send this in one of your pockets for your penpals who don't know what Pocket Letters or Pocket Letter Pals are. You can download and print one I've designed myself. It's available for free along with some custom-sized quotes. Click here: Free Pocket Letter Pals Download.

ABOUT ME

I'm including an "ABOUT ME" section in each Pocket Letter I create. I'm writing down little short tidbits of things I like or dislike, hobbies, etc. This is what I include in mine:

Name
Online usernames
Things I Love
List of Hobbies

Here's an example:

Hello! My name is Janette and I blog at Janette Lane Blog. I'm married to my wonderful husband, Lovey. We live in sunny CA where we lead a happy life, by the grace of God. Aside from my regular 9-5, I enjoy blogging, making snailmail, papercrafting, reading, and going on adventures with my husband. You can find me online on FB as Janette Lane or on my Instagram as @janettelaneblog. Hope we can continue connecting there!

QUOTE

I think quotes are good to include. Just think how fun it'll be (once you've swapped a lot of letters) to flip through your collection! Two quotes are available on the Pocket Letter Printable I made a few days ago.

MISC

You can include pretty much anything you can think of in this pocket. I wrote a post that lists items you can "pocket". Click here: Pocket Letter Ideas . The list is not exhaustive, but you can find even more inspiration for what to put in your Pocket Letters on this video tutorial:

TEA

Tea packets are the perfect size for this snail mail project! You don't have to include it, but you can if you want.. I love tea, so I enjoy getting them!

Pocket Letter Ideas

So you found your Pocket Letter Pal(s) and bought your supplies to start making your own Pocket Letters. But you're feeling stuck, uninspired, and out of ideas on what to include in this snailmail project. No worries, I've been there! Many times. Not just with Pocket Letters, but with other creative mail too.

| Get your inserts here:  Pocket Letter™ Inserts or standard trading card inserts  |

Luckily, snailmail ideas and inspiration aren't hard to come by. You can watch this video to see how I created a basic Pocket Letter. I show how easy and quick it is. My snailmail idea is not meant to intimidate! It's meant to inspire and connect creative souls all around the globe!

I've heard it mentioned from various Pocket Letter Pals that they're "just not creative enough to make pretty mail." That is so far fetched and I don't want anyone believing that for one second! Because snail mail doesn't have to be challenging. Many have been creating elaborate scrapping motifs with these Pocket Letters. It's amazing and I LOVE it, but I can see how that could deter someone who is a beginner. Decorating your Pocket Letter is fun...Okay. It's a blast! But it's not the focus...

The main thing to remember is that ultimately, these are penpal letters. This is what sets Pocket Letters apart from ATCs and pocket page scrapbooking. So think. What would you normally send your penpal? Me? I usually send stickers, sticky note samples, tea, and other cute trinkets. I've even sent menus from my favorite local restaurants! Oh! And paint chips! Goodness! I love me some paint chips! Anything goes! Do that with your Pocket Letter, too. As long as it fits in the pockets, then you're fine. If it doesn't fit, then fold it up and or trim it down.

Here's an example of what I did for one of my letters. I found a yummy recipe in a magazine that I wanted to share with my penpal.  And a cute outfit idea too! So I cut and trimmed the magazine clippings and folded them to fit in the pockets.

I also found a cute magazine ad with winged hearts (COOL!) and a picture of the Grand Canyon. So I included it as well.

You can add a quick story about your first visit to the Grand Canyon. Or if you live in Arizona, then that would be something good to share with your penfriend. Find and cut out pictures from your town's visitor brochure if you'd like.

Here's a list of ideas on what to include in your Pocket Letter:

-Stickers
-Cute sticky notes
-Foreign currency
-Magazine or newspaper articles
-Tea bag
-Paper Ephemera
-Photographs
-Sequins

I'll have other ideas on what to include in your Pocket Letters soon! Please make sure you're following my blog either through GFC or Bloglovin to keep up with all my new Pocket Letter and Pocket Letter Pals posts. Thank you!

What are Pocket Letters?

I created Pocket Letters™ as a new way to send letters to your new or existing penpals. Basically, you fill all the pockets of a 9 Pocket Trading Card Protector and send the whole page to someone who wants to swap with you. This can be a one-time exchange or you can keep exchanging Pocket Letters indefinitely. You fill the pockets with anything you like (stickers, tea bags, a note, washi tape samples, pictures, etc.) A short note or letter is included and tucked into one of the pockets. Then the Pocket Letter is folded up and sent in a standard 10 size envelope. It's the perfect way to send and collect letters from other Pocket Letter Pals (ie people who are sending mail in this format) around the world and a convenient way to store them. They fit perfectly in a binder!

You can find Pocket Letter® inserts in the official Pocket Letters® shop or you can buy standard trading card inserts, here.

Watch my informational video for an overview and explanation of this new style of sending snail mail and the story behind how I created Pocket Letters™ and Pocket Letter Pals™:

Pocket Letters FAQ

I created the concept behind Pocket Letters a week ago and already there are a lot of questions that keep reoccurring. Here are the answers to the most asked Pocket Letter questions.

What are Pocket Letters and Pocket Letter Pals™?
-Basically it's a new way to write letters to penpals for a one time-swap or permanently. You decorate all the pockets of a trading card sleeve and send the whole page to someone who wants to swap with you. You can fill the pockets with anything you like (stickers, tea bags, a note, washi tape samples, pictures, etc.) Make sure to include a short letter or note and tuck it in one of the pockets. It's the perfect way to collect letters from penpals around the world and a convenient way to store them. They fit perfectly in a binder! :)

Watch this video for more information: http://youtu.be/OxHLkm0lZi0

How do I get started?
-First, you want to make an "ad" on Instagram. Upload a picture and tag it with #pocketletter or #pocketletterpal . This allows you to connect with other people who want to swap these kinds of letters. Then you'll want to purchase some baseball trading card inserts and start decorating! You can also post an "ad" on my Facebook group to see if anyone will swap with you there.

What type of inserts are these?
-These are standard trading card inserts used for baseball cards. They are 8.5x11 (inches) and are also referred to as 9 Pocket Page Protectors.

Where do I buy these inserts?
-You can click this link to purchase them at Walmart. They're $14.09 for 100 sleeves. Or you can check Amazon here.

Do these hold Project Life cards?
-No. The dimensions on the pockets are 2.5 x 3.5 inches.  I used some PL cards in some of my inserts, but I had to trim them down.

Do I have to decorate both sides of the insert?
-It's up to you! Be creative!

Is this only a one-time swap?
-No. You can connect with others and see if they want to penpal with you in this format permanently. Or if you can't take on anymore penpals, you can always just do a one-time exchange which is what many are doing.

  Is this open Internationally?
-YES! Of course! :) As long as you find someone who wants to swap with you, you can participate.

Do I have to use these inserts?
-Yes and no. You can use other sizes. I just thought it'd be best to use this particular size.  I really hope that everyone uses the baseball card inserts because they store well in a standard binder. Also I've seen business card inserts which are similar and can also fit a standard binder. Feel free to use those too!

How much is postage?
-Postage varies depending on the weight of your contents and whether items are machinable and non-machinable. An envelope can be charged as a parcel, but there is a way to get around it. I'm currently working on a blog post and video that will share everything there is to know about shipping and handling. International shipping is another ballpark. So stay tuned! Ultimately, it's best to check with your local post office. They're pretty helpful.

Can I swap with you, Janette?
-Honestly, I'd swap with everyone if I had an endless supply of postage and time. Right now, I'm not taking anymore Pocket Letter Pals. I do apologize!

How to Make a Pocket Letter

It's so exciting seeing everyone sharing their Pocket Letter™ creations. If you don't know what that is, please read my post that explains all about how I created Pocket Letters ™ what they are, and how you can get involved.

If you've already read that post and want to get started making your own, please watch the video below for a MUST SEE Pocket Letter™ tutorial!

What's a Pocket Letter (and more FAQs)?

Pocket Letters have taken off with a running start! More like a mad dash! A few nights ago I contacted about 5 (or so) girls asking if they would participate in an exchange of the Pocket Letters I created. They agreed and I was excited just to get 5 people participating, but after a few more posts on Instagram about this new type of "letter writing", more people expressed interest and started making their own.

Now there's a Facebook group , a growing Instagram hashtag, a popular blog post, and my most viewed YouTube video to date. I'm so thankful! Office Max is definitely confused as to why a bunch of people rushed there to buy baseball trading card inserts this weekend, right? I just can't believe the positive reception on this little idea of mine.

Watch this video (or read this post) to learn what a Pocket Letter is, how to get involved, and ideas to make your own.

It's only been a few days and there are already a few repeatedly asked questions that have come up. I'm going to answer a few here.

How do I get started and how do I find Pocket Letter Pals?
-First, you'll want to find some penpals! I suggest starting with family or friends. Show them how to make a fancy, creative letter, and do a little swap! You can also join the official Pocket Letter Pals Facebook group. Or there are plenty of snail mail groups to join too. If you're on Instagram, create a post and tag it with #pocketletterpalswanted. Search the tag and send a comment or DM to anyone else who may be looking for a penpal. Also there are lots of penpal websites you can join. Just google:)

If you want to get really serious then find a Pocket Letter Pal on my Pocket Letter Pals™ network. Try it for free for 7 days! Once you've signed up you can create a profile, join groups, and connect with others who want to swap pocket mail. Regardless of where you find pals, once you find someone to swap with, then work out the details about who will write first, deadlines, general info, preferences, etc. After you've arranged your swaps, then purchase your supplies (suggested shopping list below!) and start filling your pockets with goodness!

What type of inserts are these?

Feel free to use those too, but always make sure that you tell your swap pal beforehand so they know what to expect if you're using a different insert.

Can I swap with you, Janette?
-Honestly, I'd swap with everyone if I had an endless supply of postage and time. Right now, I'm not taking anymore Pocket Letter Pals.

(If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask them in the comment section below!)

Thanks again for everyone's kind words about this idea of mine. There are so many people who inspire me, it's great to inspire others in return!

Pocket Letter Pals

Pocket Letter Pals were born...yesterday. How did it happen?  Well, I was planning on doing Project Life (budget style) by making layouts in these cheap baseball trading card inserts. So I started making a few. (Here's a sneak peek at the one I made for January:)

Anywho... As I was making these I thought, "WOW! This would make the coolest letter! I could insert something different in each pocket. One pocket can be for stickers...the other for tea...etc." My next musing was, " I want a binder FULL of these! I wonder if others would be interested in making them?" Hence Pocket Letter Pals was born. (Thank you for thinking of the #PocketLetter hashtag @devalayermail)

So here's how it works. Basically it's a one-time letter exchange in this format. A one-time swap is my personal preference. You can exchange with the same person multiple times, but I simply can't afford any more penpals. You can connect with others who are participating on my recent Instagram posts or by searching #pocketletterpal on IG.

Currently there are about 10 girls who have expressed interest, and I hope that by the summertime, we can get a substantial number going. The only "rule" is that you have to send the letter in these trading card pocket protectors. You send the entire page (all pockets filled and decorated) to one person. These are not artist trading cards where you just send one card. One page protector per person. That way all the Pocket Letters we collect can fit in a standard size binder. Plus these page protectors can be folded up and mailed in a standard 10 size envelope. WIN WIN, right?

To find Pocket Letter Pals and to begin swapping Pocket Letters™, please sign up for a free account at www.pocketletterpals.com. Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who has already agreed to do an exchange! You are the BEST!

PS. Click this link to purchase baseball trading card protectors.

Happy 2015 (25 days late!)

There really is no good reason as to why I haven't blogged since last year. I've been busy, but not to the point where I couldn't come and say hi to everyone. Maybe you could describe me as incredibly distracted the last month or so... Yeah. That's it! Work picked up once the holidays were over (Finally done with the remodel!) and I've been dating my husband this whole winter because during Fall he was incredibly busy with work and school. It's been nice finally doing stuff we've been meaning to do for months...like watching a movie. We hadn't seen one together since September of last year! We have since caught up on everything we wanted to watch and are currently bored with our Netflix subscription (first world country problems).

Aside from work, family, and spending quality time with Lovey, I've been delving a little deeper in the world of papercrafts. It's been a great experience for me... Especially on Instagram. The Planner/SnailMail/Papercraft community is amazing! I hope to start sharing more about my current crafty pursuits henceforth. I've got tons to share! But until I can get a bit more organized, here are some pictures of my projects. Just snippets of my desk and or workspace.

Journals, notebooks, planners, and stationery...Yup. That all sounds about right...Until next time, friends! Happy New Year!
